Making noise with his latest project “Control System,” Ab-Soul has gained a gang of new fans since it’s release this past May. For some of us, we’ve been rockin’ with him since the release of “Longterm 2: Lifestyles Of The Broke & Almost Famous,” but it was this release specifically that I feel finally broke him out to a larger demographic that his TDE labelmates, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, & ScHoolboy Q, had already conquered. Labeled as the “Top Dawg Under Dawg,” Ab-Soul has proved that he is indeed the ‘secret weapon’ of TDE over the past months. His raps are filled with metaphors, melodies, and verses that make you want to google what the fu*ck he was talking about. But this is what separates Soul from everyone else, he doesn’t try to hide his intelligence on his tracks one bit. But don’t get me wrong, he still makes jams for everyone. From a cut for the ladies like “Bohemian Grove” to “Gone Insane” that delivers us bars after bars. So while out in sunny South Florida for one of his first headlining shows, I sat down with the Black Lip Bastard himself for a chat by the pool.
In part 1, we speak on a range of topics from his hair, to his “longterm mentality” series, his knowledge of facts, how much ‘SOUL’ he has & more. In part 2, he speaks on a possible line of sunglasses, the process behind recording one of his deepest tracks “The Book of Soul,” how his projects always evolve around what’s going on with him at the moment, his beat choice & more.
