Laws has definitely grown over the past few years, and Yesterday’s Future shows this in several ways. The entire project was produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E League and that alone right there makes it dope. The whole idea of creating a whole project in light of the legendary Paul McCartney’s music seemed kind of out there to me, but Laws definitely crafted this well and everything meshes together almost perfectly. I always say that artists sometime have trouble and ruin samples of other artists but this project exemplifies how this should be done! Also, there were not many features and solely just Laws himself which shows that he can hold his own very well. I really enjoyed the little segments of Paul McCartney speaking. They were put in the right places and before the right songs based on subject matter. Oh, remember when we did our Outrageous Freshman List…Laws is on it!
Stand Out Tracks:
1.Momma Miss America: As the opening track Laws touches on several topics that come off as issues in the industry. Pretty much letting listeners know that this project is not going to be a cookie cutter project and it solely what he wants it to be and his vision. This sets the tone for what people can expect as they listen to the entirety of the tape. I like the title he gives this track as well…just like you rebel against what your Mom may tell you is better it’s the same when it comes to what music execs expect from artists hence the name of the song. I really like this track!
3. Knocking at The Door: The intro which comes before this track really sets this off. It just shows how he had to work to come up in the game. This track really tells a story from the beginning times to the start of what is yet to come. He never gave up through everything and when he got that one call he was ready to take on the challenge set before him and etc. The sample blends in perfectly for this song!
5. Fly: This is one of the few upbeat tracks. It definitely tells a story and the hook can kinda come off as an anthem.
7. Homeland: I like this track because Laws remembers his hometown and shows how it made him who he is as an artist. The hook on this speaks for itself. Basically letting it be known that he’s not just making music for himself but for his small town that hasn’t had anything really big happen yet, and he wants to be the one to make that possible.
13. Not Coming Down: Definitely one of my favorite tracks..it just tells about the hybebeasts that come as a result of the fame and all that. The beginning of the track also shows that Laws still remembers he’s just a regular person living a dream he had.
RATING: 4.25 out of 5
